November 14, 2024, marks the 135th birth anniversary of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru aka Chacha Nehru. Following are some rare archival images commemorating highlights of his lifetime.
On the occasion of Jawaharlal Nehru's 135th birth anniversary, we reflect on the life of India's first Prime Minister, a pivotal figure in the country's struggle for independence and its early years as a republic. 
Born on November 14, 1889, in Allahabad, Nehru was the son of Motilal Nehru, a prominent lawyer and political leader. Jawaharlal Nehru

Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of independent India, was born on November 14, 1889 in Allahabad district of Uttar Pradesh, India.
As he was very fond of children, his birthday is celebrated as Indian Children's Day.

He participated in the freedom struggle of Jallianwala Bagh Massacre (1919), Gandhi's Non-Cooperation Movement (1920) and Quit White Movement (1945).

He was also a great English writer. His English books are 'The Discovery of India', 'Glimpses of World History' and 'Towards Freedom'. His Tamil works include Glimpses of World History (1934), Autobiography (1936) and Discovery of India.

Nehru served as Prime Minister from August 15, 1947 to May 27, 1964. In 1951, he formed the India Planning Commission and formulated the first five-year plan of independent India.

 Realizing that 'India's future progress lies in improving the education of children and youth', Nehru established and maintained government institutions of higher education. Nehru passed away on May 27, 1964.
