Recommendation to impose a fine of Rs. 2000 on shops and establishments that do not display nameplates in Tamil
Chennai: A consultative meeting with representatives of the traders' associations, jointly organized by the Labour Department and the Chennai Corporation regarding the placement of nameplates in Tamil in shops, commercial establishments, food establishments and factories in the Chennai Corporation areas, was held yesterday at the Ripon Building Complex under the chairmanship of Labour Department Commissioner Raman. District-level committees have been formed in all districts under the chairmanship of the District Collector to ensure that nameplates are placed in Tamil.
Through this committee, activities such as formulating strategies to ensure the placement of nameplates in Tamil, developing methods to create awareness about the law related to the placement of nameplates, and creating awareness through the distribution of pamphlets were discussed.
It has been recommended to impose a fine of Rs. 2000 under Rule 18 (Penalty) of the Tamil Nadu Shops and Establishments Rules, 1948 on shops and establishments in local bodies that do not display nameplates in Tamil. Further, it has been recommended to impose a fine of up to Rs. 500 under Section 23 (Penalties) of the Tamil Nadu Catering Establishments Act, 1958 if nameplates in Tamil are not displayed in catering establishments.
The meeting was attended by Deputy Commissioner (Revenue (M) Finance) Prathiviraj, Joint Director of Occupational Safety and Health Karthikeyan, Municipal Revenue Officer Banuchander, Personal Assistant to the District Collector (General) Hazrat Begum, Joint Commissioners of the Labour Department Wimalanathan, Ramesh, officials and representatives of the traders' association.
